Before we begin, let me introduce you to one of my wonderful dachsies- Rosie! She is going to be turning 10 years old this year. Every night at 9:30 she decides it is time to play, but she doesn't really get the whole "fetch" thing, so she just stands there and barks at her toys. Ain't she a cutie?!
Ok, so back to the food. I found this recipe, and decided to try it out. It takes a slight amount of finesse and patience, but it is worth it in the end.
So here we go..
Braided Spaghetti Bread
Ingredients (for 2 loaves):
Spaghetti- I used about half a box.
Pasta Sauce- whole jar
Meat (if desired)
Mozzarella cheese- 1 block
Parmesan cheese
Garlic powder
Oregano (or Thyme, Rosemary, etc..)
1 egg white
Bread dough- I got two things of pizza dough from Publix
1. Cook the spaghetti. Easy.
2. Prepare spaghetti sauce and meat. As you may notice, there are green things in my sauce. I like to add broccoli to the sauce- gives it a nice little surprise crunch!
3. Cut mozzarella cheese in squares.
4. Roll out the bread in a rectangular shape. Ours look funny cause we did it in a circle first, without thinking. RECTANGLE! Very important! The bread should be thicker in the middle, and thinner on the outsides. Also very important.
5. Place in the bread dough, in this order: spaghetti, meat, mozzarella cheese. Half of each, if you are making two loaves. You can mix the spaghetti with the sauce first, if you want.
6. Make cuts along the dough, from the outside to right before the spaghetti starts. The cuts should match on both sides of the loaf, and be about two inches apart. I think I ended up with 6 on each side. Leave the ends uncut.
7. Fold on end of the bread over the spaghetti, then, fold one of the side pieces, closet to the end. Next, fold in the opposite piece. Keep folding, until you have "braided" the bread.
8. Brush the egg white onto the top of the bread. Then, dust with garlic powder, oregano, and parmesan cheese.
9. Bake. I think we did 350 for about 40 minutes...I never completely pay attention, sorry! But, when the top of the bread looks like this, it's probably ready!
And voila! Braided Spaghetti Bread!
Yummm! It's like eating your garlic bread and spaghetti at the same time- What could get better than that?!
