Pinterest Craft Creation #6- Melted Crayon Art

Over the weekend, I decided to try out a craft that I am pretty sure was meant particularly for children (unlike the Beer Bottle Glasses)- Melted Crayon Art.

There are many pictures and blogs dedicated to this online, but to save you time and energy, here's a good one for inspiration:

I've had some friends do this, but was always intrigued by the habits of people to merely line up the crayons in rainbow order, and melt them down. Beautiful, yes, but I wanted something a little different.

Like alllll my other crafts, I find, after starting, that I don't have what I need. I wanted to tape shapes, then peel the tape off later, but I had the wrong tape. Most blogs tell you to use a hot glue gun. I had only super glue. Good going, Sarah.

So the most important things you need- crayons, glue, poster board, and a hair dryer (or a hot sun, or like we used, a heat gun).

If you want to get artistic like me, then add extra poster board, blue tack, and razors.

So the first thing I did was cut out stars, and stick them on the board. I stuck them on using blue tack (Plan ahead, blue tack isn't very useful in this project. You'll see).

I then cut up the crayons, and glue them haphazardly around the board. If you want to get nice little sections like I did with the black, microwave the crayon for 30 seconds- 1 minute, then slice.

Then came the fun part- the melting!

As you can see, having the stars was kind of pointless. The wax mostly went behind the stars (blue tack doesn't really make a impenetrable barrier). And any place where the blue crayon was below the black (closer to the stars than the black), it was covered by the black.

I peeled off the stars, and cut the shape out of the wax that had melted behind. Then, I painted the area white (to be honest, using white nail polish). I added shavings of the blue wax to the paints. No reason why, just thought it would look interesting.

I like my melted art! I think it is quite artsy, more so than just melting crayons down (no offense, that is a great activity for children). I think it is a bit of a rorschach test- I see people dancing in the stars.  What do you see?

Here is the one my friend completed! What do you see in this picture?

-Tips for Melted Crayon Art-

-Start melting on low
-Be sure to put lighter colors on top of darker colors.
-Careful with the poster board- if you bend it, the wax will break off
-if you try to mix lots of colors, you will eventually get brown. Melt one color, then wait till it dries before you melt another
